Michael J. D’Aurelio is a partner in Thomas Horstemeyer’s patent prosecution group. Mike has extensive experience providing intellectual property legal services for several Fortune 500 companies. He has written hundreds of patents for many technologies including printing, imaging, electrical circuitry, power applications, optical/electrical systems, mechanical systems, flow control technologies, data communications technologies, solar cell technologies, RF technologies, automotive technologies, and more. Mike has also provided a wide range of other intellectual property services to clients including agreements such as licenses, confidentiality, and IP sales agreements.

Mike has prepared and prosecuted trademark registration applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and rendered opinions related to patentability, non-infringement, patent invalidity, and other opinions.

Mike formerly served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law for four years, where he taught patent prosecution and the drafting of patent applications. He designed the entire course including creating all classroom textbook materials and the course curriculum. He consistently received high performance evaluations from students, and his passion for teaching others has carried through to the associates and patent agents at Thomas Horstemeyer.

In his spare time, Mike enjoys working on his own inventions involving woodworking, 3D printing, welding/metal working, electronics, and other capabilities that modern technologies have to offer.

Representative matters

  • Serves as primary patent prosecution counsel to domestic Fortune 100 companies across industries with various technologies such as automotive, rubber, software, electrical, controls, communications, wireless, and other technologies.

  • Serves as patent preparation and prosecution counsel for start-up companies guiding their intellectual property procurement as they grow.

  • Manages patent prosecution of a large in-bound Patent portfolio from an automotive company in Japan.

  • Provided patent preparation and prosecution for a start-up wireless company that introduced a new disruptive wireless technology with broad applicability for power distribution by way of ground based Zenneck waves.

  • Provided patent preparation and prosecution for start-up power multiplication technologies using multiply-connected circuits.

  • Prepared and prosecuted patent applications for professors and researchers at universities, including technologies related to measuring optical pulses, industrial machinery, medical devices, micromachining, and many other technologies.

  • Prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the aerospace field.
