Lawrence Villanueva, Ph.D. is a partner in Thomas Horstemeyer’s patent prosecution group. He has 30 years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications primarily in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnological fields.

Larry has extensive experience across a wide range of technologies including pharmaceuticals, polymers and material chemistry, catalysts, and drug delivery devices.  In addition to patent prosecution, Larry counsels’ clients regarding IP due diligence as well as provide opinions relating to freedom to operate and validity/invalidity.

Larry’s clients include large corporations, research universities and institutions, and medium-sized companies. He diligently works with his clients to align their intellectual property with their business goals in order to maximize the value of their intellectual property.

Representative matters

  • Served as patent counsel for an early-stage startup company for the development of new embolics. Our team helped the company develop an extensive patent portfolio to protect and leverage their technology with investors. The company is currently in the early stages of the FDA approval process.

  • Served as patent counsel for an early-stage university-based startup company for the development of a new wound healing technologies. Our team helped the company develop an extensive patent portfolio to protect and leverage their technology with potential private and government partners.

  • Served as patent counsel for a small nutraceutical company for the development of a supplements for treating or preventing symptoms of diabetes and prediabetes. The company’s products are currently sold at Amazon and Walmart.

  • Served as patent counsel for an early-stage startup company for the development of new anti-cancer agents composed of modified hyaluronan. The company is currently in the early stages of the FDA approval process.

  • Served as patent counsel for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Technologies involved novel polymers materials and composites for space travel.

  • Served as patent counsel for a major university. Our team represents the university in numerous technical fields including lithium battery technology, drug delivery systems, robotics and computer systems, small molecule pharmaceuticals, and anti-cancer treatment.
