Steven Nugent is of counsel in Thomas Horstemeyer’s prosecution group. He has over a decade of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a variety of technical areas. Steven has drafted and secured the allowance of hundreds of patent applications across multiple technologies, including complex mechanical and medical devices, recycling systems, fitness equipment, polymer processing, computer systems and software, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and business methods, among others.

Steven has extensive experience counseling clients of all sizes, from Fortune 500 companies and universities to individual inventors and startups. He routinely advises clients on developing strategies for using patents and other forms of intellectual property to protect their inventions and other intellectual capital.

A significant part of Steven’s practice involves developing resource-conscious strategies for designing intellectual property programs tailored to the needs of particular clients and executing and implementing those programs according to each client’s business needs.

Steven received his J.D., with honors, from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with highest honors, from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Steven is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and in Georgia.

Representative matters

  • Served as patent counsel for a Fortune 500 company "Unicorn” data privacy company. Our team helped the company obtain a valuation of over $5 billion in less than 5 years by working closely with the company’s founders and early-stage engineering team to obtain over 250 patents within that time period.

  • Serve as lead patent counsel for a Fortune 500 flooring manufacturer, with an emphasis on securing patent protection for key recycling technology.

  • Serve as lead patent counsel for a technology company that develops interactive displays and software for the education and corporate sectors.

  • Served as outside patent counsel to a $4 billion late-stage startup cloud computing company, with an emphasis on identifying and protecting the company’s key cloud computing and social media technologies.

  • Serve as lead patent counsel to a construction robotics company. Our representation has focused on securing patent protection for a variety of innovations related to construction automation.
